At the start of 2024, I visited my GP because of chronic fatigue.
Every few months, the tiredness would get extreme, and I would admit to being burned out. Admittedly, when you love what you do, you don’t see it as work, so it’s easy for me to stay focused for long periods without taking recommended breaks.
However, fatigue was taking its toll - not just physically, but mentally and emotionally. Difficulty concentrating, overwhelm from excessive information, low mood and quick escalations in conflict with those closest to me. Because of this, I was referred for an ADHD assessment. Almost a year later, and I had my first consultation a couple of days ago.
The process was really interesting. The doctor took me through an hour of questioning, from childhood experiences to present day. We talked about crossing cultural barriers and having to adapt due to frequent moves across countries since birth, my coping mechanisms for past challenges and my relationships with family and friends. And after close to an hour of conversation, what the specialist told me was very surprising...
I do not meet all DSM-5 criteria for ADHD. To be officially diagnosed, all five criteria must be satisfied, and despite being so sure I would receive an ADHD diagnosis, I did not. While it's a relief to rule that out, I still need to be mindful of managing occasional burnout⚖️.
In spite of this outcome, I choose to carry on - carry on doing the things I love, because without purpose, it can be difficult to stay focused on our north star. The light that keeps us moving forward and replenishes us in the process.
So, a reminder to myself: My purpose is to empower each and every person I encounter to fulfil theirs - whether that’s launching their own business or unlocking their leadership potential.
Most importantly, I will continue to do what I love and love what I do❤️.
If you are reading this and resonate with my experience, remember that your journey is uniquely yours. Whether you’re navigating burnout, seeking clarity, or simply striving to stay aligned with your purpose, give yourself grace.
Prioritise rest, seek support when needed and never lose sight of what fuels you🧘♂️🫂🔥.
Your north star is yours to follow - trust your journey, even when the path takes unexpected turns. 💫
To our success!
