Many people do not recognise their “business mind” but for many of us, it’s been present from a young age. Just think about the chores you did that you persuaded your parents or friends to pay you to do back then. Maybe, you are very observant and always seem to notice trends each time they change. Do you see the bigger picture and find yourself coming up with really good ideas that have not been seen or done the way you visualise them anywhere else? Do you naturally surround yourself with positive people because you recognise that allowing negativity to surround you will undermine your vision? Maybe you know how to network and maintain good relationships with people. Afterall, relationships are central to your success as an entrepreneur and the average customer is more likely to buy from you when referred by a friend.

But some say entrepreneurs are born and not made while others believe that entrepreneurship is a practise. Can you really create an entrepreneur? Or are entrepreneurs genuinely born with innate skills that bloom when they come across that opportunity that they can take to market? Either way, one thing is true – entrepreneurship calls for a rare type of persistence and independence; a willingness to be proactive and be unrelenting through times of uncertainty.
While the entrepreneurial journey will test you, it can also be incredibly gratifying. My own experience has been my single most powerful transformational journey resulting in the greatest personal growth to date!
But why should you consider transitioning into Entrepreneurship this year?
In this fast-paced world we live in, there is only one constant – and that is change. Every single one of us has lived through significant change over the last couple of years, mostly due to external factors, i.e. the economy, the political landscape in the country, social change and even technological change. Yet change is one of the most feared things.
People fear losing control of their territory when change is enforced from outside of themselves. There is also the fear of the uncertainty that follows because we are wired for safety. In addition, decisions imposed on people suddenly, with no time to get used to the idea or prepare for the consequences, are generally resisted. But despite the unexpected changes of the last three years, you’re still standing aren’t you? So, if noone has told you this already, let me be the first – some part of you knows you have what it takes to take that leap of faith and discover the entrepreneur within.
There are several reasons you should seriously come off the fence and start your own business:
1. You are self-motivated: You like to come up with your own ideas and do things your own way to accomplish a goal or if someone starts you on a task, you can keep going and get the job done.
2. You are a leader: Most people go along with your suggestions without too much difficulty.
3. You are pretty organised: You may be the sort of person who before starting anything you like to have a plan that you can stick to. Besides, planning helps you to determine the skills necessary for success.
4. You are capable of making decisions: You like to make your own decisions whether it is a good decision or not and you are happy to face the consequences.
5. You like people: You really like people and you get along with most people very well.
6. You are trustworthy: You tend to say what you are thinking in a straightforward manner, even if other people do not agree with you.
7. You consider yourself a hardworking individual: You do not mind working hard, so you continue to be proactive and keep pushing until the task is accomplished.
8. You can commit to something long-term: When you set your goal and make up your mind to get something done, nothing can get in the way of that and you typically finish what you have started.
9. You naturally take responsibility: You tend to take charge and make sure you see the task through to the end.
10. You understand the importance of record-keeping: You understand the importance of documentation because record-keeping is critical to help you measure your success.
If you recognise any of the following traits in yourself, it is time you spent time focusing on what you want to do and start working towards becoming the best at it. However, you may not feel that the above statements describe you 100% but you really want to become an Entrepreneur. It is possible if you acknowledge your weaknesses and start working on strengthening them. At the end of the day, when you learn to become competent in what you want to do, your confidence grows.
